Posted 11-11-02 12:37 PM So who knows what about Valerian root? I just took a 1000 mg pill 15 minutes ago and am feeling really sleepy now. I guess it's supposed to be for relaxation, but I thought I'd try it on a day I was scheduled to be home.

I've used valerian tea to relax before bed at night if I'm wound up after work. I know the dosage in commercial teas are very small, so while it didn't 'put me out' it did seem (either psychologically or for real) to help me relax. If you're actually taking this in pill form or in the form of a tincture, or even brewing a tea by steeping the herb in it's natural form, I wouldn't be surprised if the effects were much stronger and you did feel sleepy.
Possibly the dose you took while it might be what is recommended for you, might be a bit strong to start out with. As your body becomes accustommed to this herb (as with many others) you might have to kind of ramp up, or start smaller and gradually increase till you find the dose that dose what you need it to do. Unless your doc advised you to try this, then by all means stay with the prescribed dose.

Posted 11-11-02 06:27 PM Valerian is the natural base from which valium is derived and has a mildly sedative effect. Other similar herbs with slightly different actions are St John's Wort (an anxiety reducer that promotes a general feeling of wellbeing... Dancer Blossoms loves it; >) and KavaKava ( combines the action of St John's Wort and Valerian - slight sedative with uplifting, anxiety reducing component)
Enjoy; >)

Posted 11-11-02 08:23 PM Thanks, Ahnalira. I've tried St. John's Wort in the past and all it did was hop me up even more wired than normal, so I had to ditch it. Sometimes herbs have an opposite effect on me, but it appears that the Valerian Root will be calming to me.

Posted 11-11-02 11:39 PM Melatonin does that to me. They always seem to be dreams in which I'm being chased and while I do get to sleep quicker, I wake up exhausted. This is in fact why I decided to try valerian tea. I like chamomile tea before bed too, or to settle the stomach (think Peter Rabbit) Chamomile is milder yet than valerian.

I saw this yesterday evening and didn't get it, so I slept on it.
I see it again today and I still don't get it.
