Posted 10-12-02 09:27 PM After going out to a new restaurant here in town for an early dinner, we were just rounding a curve on our street to get back home when a neighbor who I've not even officially met yet hailed us frantically. She and another neighbor had yet another neighbor's baby. The little one was blue and not breathing. Both women were franticly trying to figure out what to do. Baby's mom was not there, neither was dad. I quickly asked if anyone knew CPR and both women said no, but didn't you have to cover both mouth and nose or something. I said yea and to put baby down on the ground, head back. Told lady one to use 2 fingers to compress his chest but not too hard, and gave her a rhythm to try to stick to. I proceeded to try breathing. There was no heartbeat and no breathing. I was not able to see his little chest rising even when I did breath for him, but with the chest compressions we did get a heartbeat going and keep it till the E-unit got there. They ventilated him and rushed him away to the hospital. The lady working on his chest followed the ambulance to the hospital and has since stopped by to tell me that he is not breathing on his own, he is currently on a ventilator.
The baby's dad told me he had been sick and not able to keep any formula down so they were using an eye dropper to give him pedialyte. He started crying just after the last bit of pedialyte and his dad went to change his diaper and he stopped crying and breathing. I have no idea how long he hadn't been breathing, but it was long enough to run outside and get the two neighbors, give the baby to them and then go inside and call the baby's mother on the phone. I had to get him off the phone to get his butt outside so he was available to answer questions if they rescue workers needed him. Frankly, he looked maybe 19 or 20 max himself. These folks are all around the corner from me so I see them but it's not a close neighborhood so I don't know them really.
Anyway, I'm not sure what to ask you to pray for in regard to this, maybe just for what is best for this poor wee baby. and I mean wee baby. I'd guess maybe 4 months, definately no more than 6 and I'm doubting that. The fact that his daddy wasn't right there trying to help, or at least trying to get someone else to help, he wasn't the one to call 911, (one of the other ladies did that) and his level of calm on the phone to the mom "Okay, well, there's someone here saying I have to go, so I'll call you back" I'm a bit frightened about what this little boy might come home to if he does make it. Not to mention how long he was not breathing and any potential damage from that. I know that sounds judgemental, but it is what I saw and it was disturbing. I'm trying to temper that with the fact that everyone reacts to a crisis differently, but...
If anyone needs a prayers and good thoughts right now it's this sweet baby boy.
Thank you so much

Posted 10-12-02 09:39 PM That poor little one is in my thoughts and prayers tonight. It also serves as a sad reminder to me that I should go and renew my CPR training - it is such an important thing.

Posted 10-12-02 09:48 PM Wow Lori. That is a scenario noone ever hopes to have to go thru. As a daycare provider, I have to be yearly trained in infant/child CPR and still have never had to use it. I'm very lucky in that regard. Thank goodness you knew what to do. Hopefully, the baby will not have suffered permanent damage and perhaps the parents will be forced to grow up? God forbid it was anything other than young, flaky, and shock on the dad's part. I will keep all of you in my prayers. You did a brave and good thing regardless of the outcome. Please know that. You may have taken it as rude but as I explained, it was not intended as such, therefore it wasn't.

Posted 10-13-02 12:36 AM Oh that poor baby. I hope you can report the child is fine soon. That little soul's path seems to be a hard one.

Posted 10-13-02 08:34 PM So scary and sad. The baby's lucky you came by when you did (and all those other neighbors were there, as well.)
Hopefully it was just the shock of what was happening that made the father react the way he did, and the baby will be fine. "Are the fires of Hell a-glowing? Is the grisly reaper mowing? Who can provide the world with the answer to these pressing questions?"

Posted 11-01-02 10:31 AM Hi everyone,
I bumped this up again because I was finally able to get an update on baby.
First off, his name is Brandon and he is NOW a mere 10 weeks old! Even younger than I thought! Of course I wasn't really thinking too much about that at the time lol.
Yes, he made it!!!! While trick-or-treating last night I bumped into one of the ladies I remember being there. Turns out it's 'Grandma' She was thrilled to meet me again as they had no idea who we were when we stopped to help lol.
Anyway, here's the skinny. You might wish to get out the tissues. My heart hurts just thinking about it.
As I said Brandon is now 10 weeks old. He's going to have his feeding tube removed today as he is starting to take to a bottle-finally. He will come home for the day on Saturday and if there are no adverse effects, he'll be allowed to come home for good Monday!!! He's been in two different hospitals since the day he and I met.
When he arrived at the hospital, it was determined that Brandon was not, in fact, ill. He had blood on his brain, and several broken ribs. 3 of which were starting to heal so had been broken previously. It seems that the daddy who's behavior had me concerned had been shaking him, more than just on that day. Daddy is now in jail.
He was not talking to Mommy on the phone. Grandma called Mommy later and informed her to get her butt to the hospital. She has been there with Brandon since then. Grandma has handled the legal issues. She was not aware that Daddy was doing the phone call thing until I mentioned that in response to these details last night. She was furious to hear that as is understandable.
Anyway, he has suffered some light damage to his brain. They are thinking that it might be a small enough amount that other areas of his brain may even be able to compensate for that loss, though they expect some learning difficulties. He is so young that it's tough to tell how extensive these difficulties will be. He will begin 'play therapy' next week!
He will however, when he heals, be just fine physically from all indications.
I just wanted to let you all know.
Yeah, I'll probably drop in and say hello when he comes home...and in case you're wondering, Grandma showed me pictures and he looked adorable in his little devil halloween costume.
Hugs to all!

Posted 11-01-02 11:00 AM That poor little kid. I'm so glad Grandma is taking over. And maybe with a burst of healing energy little Brandon will be normal after all. He has the love of total strangers working for him now. 10 weeks old? How could anyone hurt someone that small? It's not a real question. I know disturbed people act out. It's just so infuriating when helpless children get hurt. ...Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily...life is but a dream

Posted 11-02-02 04:02 PM Thanks for the update Lori. I add my prayers for this little baby. I toss my cookies for Disney.
I wonder what inspired this new Disney T-shirt? "I'm right. You're wrong. Any Questions?"
