Andy's appointment is today, right? What time?

And, what is the prize this time? Is it an all expense paid trip to WDW for a family of four?

Coastalwader 12lbs2oz 23.5"

TrpltJanie 14lbs1oz 22.5 inches

Francine 11 lbs. 13 0zs. 22 3/4 inches

BethK 12lb. 6.5 oz. and 24 inches

I’m going to declare Francine the winner of this round. He is 10 pound, 3 ounces, and 22 3/4 inches. He is growing at a normal curve, but do have to admit that some of his preemie friends are a few pounds heavier.

Is there some competition somewhere that I don't know about that Andy's in?

He's growing, he's thriving, he's healthy and his weight gain is wonderful. Celebrate Andy's progress and forget about what the OTHER babies are doing.

You make me so mad sometimes!!

Actually, yes there is a competition.

I am being serious now. I understand what you are saying, but there are a group of preemie parents we are friends with, and we have all had the same problems. We keep tabs on everything so we know how well our children are doing. We celebrate where we are, of course, but when the age of your child is actually 3 months different than his gestational age, it gets confusing.

We chart what this group does so if there is a problem we can jump right on it. The weight of the child has bearing on a number of developmental milestones beyond size, and larger babies (at this age) tend to fight illnesses better as well.

I will admit I would like Andy to be 13 or 14 pounds, he is currently at the 15% percentile, but growing at the proper rate. It would be one thing if I were measuring him against full-term babies, we aren't doing that though. We are just trying to make sure he stays on course for what is normal for him. I am not some twisted stage father.

If you could have held him when he was 1 pound 4 ounces, you would understand where my head is at. I don't want him to be fat, I want him to be healthy.

I know exactly what you are saying, Robb. I think it is great you have a group of folks to work with like this. It is a learning experience for you, and others.

Watching the weight gain is really a big deal. Mari gained very, very slowly. She was not as small as Andy at birth. Her weight at birth was 3 lbs. 12 ozs. She was not a good eater at all, and had to be coaxed. Every ounce she gained was a milestone for a while.

It is also very true about how their little immune systems act. Preemies are known to have weakened immune systems. Mari still tends to catch thing easier then most kids. She also suffers from acid reflux disease, which could relate back to her prematurity.

How long has Andy been on the formula now? Is he a good eater?

Sorry if I came off a little high-handed there, Robb. It's just that I see Andy as a perfect little boy and every ounce he gains is wonderful, regardless of how he measures up to the other premies. And he's going to KEEP gaining and, sooner or later, surpass the others.

As far as his immune systems is concerned I'm not going to buy into any theory that says he's always going to be having problems because he is a premie. No sir.

I realize that you may think it's easy for me to say this because it's not my baby...however these words are exactly the same ones I'd tell my brother or sister if their babies were premies. It was how I was raised. My parents expected good health and we were healthy children.

I'm expecting Andy to be totally and completely healthy. I don't care how the other babies are doing. I know Andy is going to keep eating and keep gaining and, sooner or later, you'll be chasing him around the house and stopping him from shampooing the dog with formula.

He has been on formula exclusively for a month now, and has kept the same weight gain "rate", even though he is on a 22cal formula of Neosure when they wanted him to be on 24cal. The 24cal was too rich, and he kept chucking it up.

Believe it LL. His lungs are healthy, but he still has chronic lung disease. It will take 5 years for his lung tissue to be replaced by fully healthy lung tissue, and we have been warned that his ability to grow properly can and will have a long term effect on how his lungs function after 5 years old. Remember, this is more than Andy's Dad talking, I have immersed myself in baby health issues for the last three years of writing for the March of Dimes. I have read the Pew Health Report more times than I care to remember, THEN I end up having a preemie (sometimes, ignorance is bliss).

Ignorance is indeed bliss. I think I'm gonna back out of the Andy pool until I get some personal issues worked out here.

I wish you, your wife and Andy the best of luck, Robb. I hope everything goes well for you.

My two oldest nieces had 'problems' when they were babies.

The first my sister liked to referred to as a 'nibbler' when she ate. Sounded reasonable until my Mom showed me the bottles of breast milk my sister had left in the fridge for feeding the baby while she was out running errands. Two ounces of milk each. My sister was so determined to breast feed she refused to supplement with formula. When she noticed the doctor wrote 'failure to thrive' on my niece's chart...she changed doctors. Add to that an alergy to cow's milk in any form.

The second looked like a nice chubby baby, until you picked her up. She was she was made of fluff. It was amazing how light she was to pick up. Doctor said she was a 'lazy baby'. She didn't want to do anything, so she have very little muscle tone. It felt like you were holding a Cabbage Patch kid.

Fast forward....they are now both perfectly healthy teens.

There is something amazing and resilient in children. They seem to find their stride at their own pace.

With all the love and care you guys give Andy, I can't help but feel positive about that little fighter's future.
I toss my cookies for Disney.

I wonder what inspired this new Disney T-shirt? "I'm right. You're wrong. Any Questions?"

Robin--it is amazing when one looks back and think "Wow--we ACTUALLY survived one crisis after another." What you said about children being able to bounce back at their own pace--VERY TRUE! I bet your sister is running ragged but is happy that things turned out so well.
