Posted 01-20-03 08:49 PM Up here in the frozen state of Massacusetts, it is very, very cold these days. This week, every day has lows in the minuses. When you factor in the wind chills, we may be feeling temps as low as -35º in the next two days. Brrr cold! The wind is blowing so right now, it sounds like a blizzard out there.
I don't mind it. I stay in, for the most part, when it is this cold. Anything below 5º, or so, is tough for me to tolerate, to breathe.
I did notice today that it was still light out at 5:00 PM! This is a good sign, the days ARE getting longer.

I honestly have no idea how you guys do it. I know it gets hell hot here in the summer, but I think I'd rather fight that than some of those brutally cold temps. friggin brrr!

Posted 01-22-03 04:47 PM I hear ya Francine - Upstate NY is sub-zero and bone-chilling to say the least. Since the last 2 snow blizzards that have left upwards of 3 feet of snow on the yard and 10 foot high ice banks at the end of the driveway (from the lovely town plows), I have been asking myself repeatedly "Why do I live in NY?!"
I too was just thinking about the days getting longer last night on my way home from work - it was still light at 5pm! Woohoo - well, atleast it is something.

Pretty dang cold here in the tundra..
But we tundra dwellers are supposed to thrive in the cold..
Pretty funny tho that they've had to truck in snow for the Winter Carnival! *Beth*

Posted 01-22-03 11:23 PM I forgot Beth! They can whine all they want, we get the bone chilling temps at lot longer than anyone!
Yes, very little snow. I think we have had 7" TOTAL this year, although it is -5 with a WC. I did just walk the dog in my Birkenstocks, though.

Posted 01-23-03 09:10 AM It is -12 here, with a WC of -35. I don't think the dog needs a walk that badly. Dad Extraordinaire

Posted 01-23-03 09:12 AM It's days like this that I miss CA and thinking 60 degrees is cold! It's 15 here now, going to 24 and back down to 11. With the wind chill it's -2 right now. At least we don't have the snow you all have to make it feel colder.
13 year old boys, I swear. His ski type coat is too nerdy he says so he wore a sweatshirt with a jean jacket.

Posted 01-23-03 09:50 AM Dab, I hear you! We have wind chills at -25º today, with the current temp outside my kitchen window at -2º. I got Mari to wear her p coat, but no hat, no gloves, and heaven forbid she wear any type of winter shoe or boot! I know I sound just like my father when I start the lecture on how much heat you lose from your body when you don't wear a hat. Lucky she gets a ride to and from school, so she doesn't have to stand at the bus stop.

Posted 01-23-03 12:33 PM Say what you want, but I'd rather be too cold than too hot. With the heat all you can do is take off clothes until you're naked, then there's nothing else you can do. At least with the cold, you can keep adding layers and your body heat will burn calories to keep you warm.

Posted 01-23-03 03:42 PM Naked or not, I have NEVER been so depressed in all my life and it has nothing to do with being bummed about just getting home from vacation...it has everything to do with the cold.
Just shoot me now, the actual temp outside is currently -24 (not wind chill, actual temp) and THAT is in the SUN! OMG..I am going to die. I just KNOW it!
The worst part is we came back to a broken heating system and I'm typing with fingers I can't feel. I think the temp in the house finally made it up to a big ol 62 degrees last I checked.
I'm going to die.
I just know it.
Can you say "Popsicle"?? I thought you could.

I hope you got the heating fixed by now. I'm still not use to this propane thing, I'm use to having heat come from some pipe in the ground and me paying PG&E every month, not this delivery stuff. I forgot to look at the level and woke up one morning and there was ice on the inside of my windows in the house!
I've learned 2 important lessons moving to a cold area
1) buy a house with a fireplace
2) check your propane levels all the time and especially days before a weekend LOL
Our heater is on electricity so if the electric goes out, we have no heat at all. No fireplace, nothing. When we ran out of propane that weekend, we hit Walmart for 4 small electric heaters. Someone stayed up while we slept around them in the living room : )

Heat still broken. Am currently wearing 2 pair of socks, a long sleeve tshirt, sweatshirt, sweat pants and have a big blanket around my bod. Hard as HECK to type wearing all this extra equipment. We're somewhat worried about our pipes freezing tonite but will get up every hour to run hot water thru the system and flush the toilets....oh GOD, mom NEVER told me home ownership would be so FUN! OMG!!! Joy joy joy!! LOL
This is just further incentive however, to get hubby to think moving away from this cold is HIS idea because HE hates it so much. heh heh heh.....
I may have to wear a hat to bed tonite.
Shall I take photos?
