Posted 01-16-03 01:02 AM Here's DaBoyz!
This is Ben my 16 year old with his date for homecoming last October.
Nate decided to borrow my Santa Mickey hat for his class party. I snipped the background to remove his classroom.
This is our dog Hercules 'helping' me in the rose garden one day last summer.
Ed's snoozing and hasn't given me permission to post a pic of him so no go there. (though I doubt he'd really mind)

Posted 01-16-03 08:59 AM LOL Thanks, I'm pretty proud of my guys. The camera angle on the dog is a bit deceptive. He's actually a pretty big dog. Although he thinks he's a lap dog, at least with 'Mom'
He's following in his daddy's paw-steps. Dad is a German Shepherd that weighed in around 100 pounds. Mom is a bit smaller, but still decent sized too. Herc is pretty close to 'Dad's' size. He can put his paws on my shoulder-if I let him-and look me in the eye and I'm 5'8" tall.
It is fun seeing the dear ones of those we hang with online, as well as those we actually interact with. I've found it personalizes the net for me. Now when you post something about your family, I get a more accurate mental pic. Personally, I like that.

Posted 01-16-03 09:43 AM Lovely sons, Fantaysya! Very handsome! Your son's girlfriend
reminds me of Ashley Judd!
Here's a tip on photos that seem way too big:
I mess with my photo size using Photostudio 2000 SE, but not everyone
has that, so I took a copy of your baby:
and using paint (which everyone should have), I altered it by
1). click on "image",
2). then click on "stretch/skew",
3). then under the "stretch" part put in 50% in both vert and horz planes.
You may have to mess a little with the white area to make that go away, but you'll get the hang of it.
(there should be little boxes on all four corners as well as at the
midpoints of all four lines. When you run your cursor over these boxes, your pointer turns
into an arrow and you can re-size the white part with the mouse.
4). Then you save it as ("save as) a JPEG (there should be a
drop down box under "save as type" for JPEG).
After you have it the way you want it, load it up
and paste it in here!
Have fun!
(still hiding from Crank/Coastal. I'm not sure how happy they are that I'm teaching y'all my bad habit)

Posted 01-16-03 10:02 AM I love Photo Studio 2000. It let's me
play with photos to my hearts's content.
It doesn't matter WHO'S photo is is, either!
Thanks for letting me play with Nate's
pic, Fan. Photography always cheers me up!
All I did was shrink him, sharpen him up a little,
then I grabbed a background from a Google search,
enlarged it, sharpened and enhanced/enriched the colors
a little bit and VIOLA!
Happy Christmas Nate card!
That was fun!

Posted 01-16-03 10:05 AM Ya know...I did resize them in Photoshop, optimized em too. The one of Ben took but the others didn't for some reason and I was wiped out from work so I didn't bother trying to figure out why. Just opted to go to bed and pass out lol.
I'll have to check out that software, I'm not familiar with it. I have Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop 7.0, PictureIt Photo, MGI PhotoSuite, FlipAlbum and a couple of others that I don't have loaded on my puter right now. Mostly I'm working my way through Photoshop right now though.
I'm not sure what kind of issues the guys might have with posting photos as we're not actually storing them here. We're direct linking to another site, at least I am. The biggest issue might be with size of the file and how fast folks can load them. Photos can really make things lag.
I love seeing other folks' photos myself, so I'm hoping others might jump in the game too.

Posted 01-16-03 10:11 AM Quick tip on merging photos:
If your program has "layers" (you'll
know what I mean when you get into it),
try to do a "soft edge" or "soft blur"
on your top layer.
Fantayzya had already cut out the background
on Nate so his classroom didn't show. I took
the ears off the hat with my "magic wand"
(some programs have better magic wands than
others), then copied my "Nate" onto the Mickey
Mouse background.
At this point the photo obviously looked like a
C/P job because the edges of Nate were so harsh.
All I did was select the top layer (Nate) and did
a 1% "soft edge" effect so his shoulders and hat
didn't look like they were harsly cut. The blend
works out rather well, don't you think?
I shouldn't be giving away all my tricks here,
but I think it's alot of fun putting people into
settings and playing with the digital portion
of photography. I hope y'all learn how to do this
and have fun with your OWN pics this way as well!
Besides, I save the art stuff for 35mm film
anyway because, after all, I'm a purist!
Now I really have to stop all this playing and
try to do something productive today. At least
I did something creative and that makes me feel
much better!

Posted 01-16-03 10:12 AM Kewl! you posted that while I was typing mine! I love it! My objective with the pic of Nate was actually to appease my ex-mother-out-law so I didn't put much effort into it. It was grainy because I actually enlarged it to make it puter wallpaper, and again, didn't clean it up too well lol.
Does that software allow you to increase the resolution too? Reason I ask is that I do that sometimes for printing purposes. I shoot at the highest resolution the camera has (2.1 megapixels in my case) but I have a dye sublimation printer for photos and if I use Photoshop to increase the resolution before I print it it can make a huge difference in the final print. Haven't really played with my HP ink jet printer in that area yet. I know increasing the saturation can sometimes make things look better too (or worse in other cases lol) The down-side to the resolution thing is it makes the file size huge and it adds to the time it takes for the printer to process the information. Worth it if you really want a great print though at times. I usually up the resolution, print it and then either drop it back down or delete depending on if I've got another original copy or not.

Posted 01-16-03 10:15 AM Oops! I didn't see your reply before I posted, Fan!
I've tried other photo programs. My sister has an Adobe
program that I actively hate. It sounds like you have
many at your fingertips!
I've found that for me, personally, if I concentrate on
learning and taking advantage of all the bells and whistles
of just one program, I do better than playing with all the
other programs that are out there. Perhaps one day I'll
grow tired of PhotoStudio, perhaps not. Right now, though,
it does everything I want and I'm very happy with it.
I think you're right about the storage thing, but I'm not
sure about the bandwidth hog that I can be when it comes to
photos. That's why I shrink mine like you shrunk your first
one.
Boy!! Can I totally relate to just being too tired to
fix things!

Posted 01-16-03 10:22 AM Resolution:
Yes! I've found if I change the DPI to 300 or higher,
(but watch the ink output when you print!!!) I get a better
quality printout and desktop. PhotoStudio allows me to do
this, but I suspect that any program will have this particular
function.
When taking the shot on the camera, you can always up the
image quality or image size. If you want a really cool
desktop, you need to take the LARGEST size photo of your
subject (let's say Nate), then make sure the quality function
on your camera is set at "Best" or "Fine" or whatever the
highest function is.
This will give you a HUGE picture on your camera, and you
may not be able to take many more pictures with this large
one on it, but it's best if you want a great desktop.
When you download, make sure you're always editing in the
actual view as opposed to zooming in or out. This way you'll
have an idea of the resolution and how it will look on
your desktop.
You can try playing around with it by using a cat or dog
in your house (or a sleeping husband) until you get the hang
of it. Once you know by experience how everything works,
you'll have no problem producing wonderful results with
your kid pics or vacation shots.

Posted 01-16-03 10:29 AM Adjustments made lol. I also agree about getting to know your software, one program at a time. I was hooked on FlipAlbum when I first started with the digital pics. It was easy, quite powerful for a beginner, and made nice album type slide shows automatically.
Then I found PaintShop Pro and it was a bit more involved, but also did alot more. I spent quite a bit of time getting to know that one too.
About the time I was really getting comfortable with it, my son came home from school with a copy of Photoshop. Because it seems to be considered 'THE' software for photos, I thought I'd give it a try. To really do that I felt I should ignore the others for the time being and just concentrate on this one. It's going okay, but I've had quite a learning curve.

Posted 01-16-03 10:36 AM And one final word and I gotta stop running my mouth:
I'm "dumbing down" my explanations somewhat NOT because I think Fantayzya is a novice or stupid. On the contrary, I think there are several of us who have played with this medium enough to realize what a fellow enthusiast is saying when they say DPI (dots per inch) or resolution (sharpness, color, saturation, etc).
Part of my simplistic explanations comes from writing procedure manuals where I presume the user has absolutely NO experience and I must walk them through step-by-step. The other part of my explanations are for those who rarely use photography and their software and they just need a little boost when getting started. I think we're going to be pointing alot of posters in the direction of this thread, so I'm writing for the novice as well as the experienced user.
PLEASE!! If you have ANY questions, don't hesitate to ask. There are those of us here who LOVE photography and LOVE sharing all the wonderful things you can do with your pictures! You aren't going to look stupid or foolish or dumb because each and every one of us started out not knowing how to use this exciting tool of creation. We understand! BOY oh BOY DO WE UNDERSTAND!!
It can be really frustrating seeing "regular" folk
appear to be doing something effortlessly and it's
a struggle for you to even figure out how to upload
pictures, let alone play around with them. We have
some excellent teachers here with great advice so
don't hesitate to ask!
hee hee hee....I sound like some Public Service Announcer,
don't I?
OK, that's it. I really gotta run now!
Take lots of pictures, post them when you can and
have a GREAT TIME!!! Have FUN with it!

I've heard alot about Photoshop. Maybe when I'm back

Photoshop does indeed have a steep learning curve! I've used it since version three.
Bert Monroy has a wonderful website about it: http://www.bertmonroy.com/ and there are tons of tips and tricks by googling it.
