I decided to tell my antivirus software to check for any new updates, and when I rebooted...boom...it caught one.
This wasn't the bugbear that everyone is buzzing about, but another virus that normally goes after servers. My software found the suspicious SCRSVR.EXE file.
I was able to delete the file, remove a reference to it in my win.ini file, and a reference to it in my registry (which was not in the exact same folder the 'fix' told me to look for it.
Be VERY careful if you have sharing enabled on your computer. I had my C: drive shared, so I could transfer files between this laptop and my regular PC.
I've disabled the share now and upgraded to the IE 5.5 with service pack AND downloaded the latest security patches from Microsoft.
Be careful out there folks.

I toss my cookies for Disney.
I wonder what inspired this new Disney T-shirt? "I'm right. You're wrong. Any Questions?"

I should add, I also uninstalled Microsoft Outlook from my computer. I don't use it to receive my email, and many viruses take advance of the program.

Outlook might be a bit slicker than Netscape or some other mail programs, but in my opinion it is too "high maintenance" a product. Viruses are often written to send themselves to everyone in your address book. Microsoft keeps issuing patches to it's products, but why go through the grief of constantly having to patch something and keep up with all the security alerts? IMO, it is better to use a product that you don't have to worry as much about.
$0.02, YMMV Tink *~*~*

Robin,
If you're concerned about sharing, you can add a different protocol to both machines, and associate sharing only to that protocol. That way, you can share inside your network, but not outside it.
Let me know if you want any more details.

Thanks Karl.
Right now I don't have a lot of need for sharing, but I'll keep that in mind. My old computer is currently powered off and disconnected, as I haven't used it in months. Someday I should venture into rebuilding it.
The good computer, is currently sitting on my dining room table waiting for me to get off my butt and replace the hard drive which went corrupt last weekend. All my files are backed up on CD (what a pia that was), so they'll be easy to reload. At least I can now pick and chose what I want to install instead of all the default junk that came preloaded.
Thank goodness for this trusty laptop... At least 'all this' got me to upgrade the antivirus software on it and install the firewall.
