We bought a DVD player today. It's about time, I suppose, right?
Well, let me back up a bit. Two weeks ago, we got home, and found our neighbors, who had just moved, left a DVD player out by the trash bin. Tim brought it in, and found the tray that the DVD goes in was off its track.
So, he fixed it, and we set it up, and it wouldn't play anything.
Fast forward to today.
We decide to head to the mall, and pick up a DVD player. We got a Toshiba, nothing fancy, but has the newer features. The salesman told us we would probably need to buy an rf modulator, and we got better cords to hook it up. Sure enough we did need the modulator, and then I thought, gee, maybe that's what the one we found outside needed. So, we hooked it up, and sure enough, that's what it was!
Now, we are thinking we might bring the new one back. One thing, though. The salesman told us that as DVD players get older, they aren't made to play the newer DVDs. He said that the newer DVDs have to much data on them.
So, is this true?

I think he's embellishing the story a little. I don't think movie sizes would effect your players ability to read it.
If I were you, I'd keep the new one you bought and either give the old one to a friend who could use it or try to sell it through ads to offset some of the cost of the newer one. I think if it plays, you could probably get $30 for it. Speak your mind, but ride a fast horse.

Our 1.5 year old DVD player won't play CD-Rs or DVD-Rs. My uncle transferred some old home movies and made copies on CD-R. You can see those on a newer DVD player, not our "ancient" one.
If you don't have any CD-Rs or DVD-Rs to watch, I'd return the new player, and buy a new one in a couple years when they're even more amazing (or obsolete, in that case buy whatever is replacing them!) "Are the fires of Hell a-glowing? Is the grisly reaper mowing? Who can provide the world with the answer to these pressing questions?"
"The candy man can," Rumsfeld added grimly.
