Today after going to a certain webpage that shall remain "unnamed," I came across a strange thing.
First, a little background. I use Netscape to view webpages but a newsreader to read newsgroups. I also use a Macintosh. Suddenly I was subscribed via Netscape Communicator to a newsgroup called: "alt.privacy.anon.server" I have never gone to that newgroup via my newsreader, Netscape, or even Google much less subscribed to it. I noticed the subscribtion when I was checking my email as the newsgroups and email on Netscape or both read via the same window on Netscape.
I know a couple of years back there was a trojan that forced your computer to open a connection to a certain newsgroup. This slowed your computer down. My computer will not try to open a connection to a newsgroup without asking me first and I also don't have my isp newserver information in Netscape as I use a different newserver than my isp and also a newsreader other than Netscape. So luckily no connection was made to that newsgroup via my computer.
I am the only one who uses my computer. My sons and husband have their own computers.
Strange, very strange.

I did a little reading. There are several worms that cause your computer to try and post an infected message to newsgroups. One is called: I-Worm.Hybris. Here is it's description: quote: 2.Send infected messages to "alt.comp.virus" group.
3.Spread the virus to remote machines that have the SubSeven backdoor trojan installed.
Since I don't do Windows, this can't infect my computer.
