About 10 minutes ago (between 4:20 and 4:30pm) I kept getting messages to download a file (either index or 505) before I was allowed access in here, in Supercalafrag..., or in DIS-cussions.
Once I saved it to disk and ran a scan on it, I went ahead and accepted the download, only to find that any post I tried to look at came back with a "page unfound" message. When I hit the refresh button, it came back with a "site unfound" (you should recognize THAT page, it's what happens when you type in "cm" instead of ".com" in your address line.)
Further investigation shows this file to be a "dummy" script, something simple and stupid that will map your browser to show a "dummy" page saying the page isn't there.
***BEWARE!!! THIS ONE WAS PRETTY SIMPLE-SIMON, BUT NEVER ASSUME THE NEXT ONE WILL BE!!! ALWAYS SAVE TO A DISK FIRST AND RUN A VIRUS SCAN!!!***
How I solved it was this: I did an immediate search with the "*" and the date specified as to today so anything altered today would show up. Then I looked at anything that was added or changed around 4:00 or after. The file WON'T let you delete it, but you can render it useless by selecting it, do a CNTL-A to select all text, then delete button to delete all text. Then save it again as an empty file.
You might have trouble saving it again, but keep going through the save process until you're out. THEN delete the file into your garbage can.
If Crank or Coastal has a better way, please post it here so people will know how to get rid of this crap, otherwise:

LL,
Could you maybe delete it by holding the control key down while dragging it to the trash? I had to do that to get rid of some sticky cookies the other day.

Hmm....I hadn't tried that, but I will in the future. Thanks for the tip!
Being an 'old school' person, I'm more familiar and comfortable with keyboard commands than mouse manipulations.

Lunar, I've had a similar thing happen. Are you using IE? I actually believe this to be a website weirdness. If you close IE and open it again, the problem goes away. It will not stop asking you to download unless you exit IE and then come back. Not sure if there is hacking/surveillance attempt here, but as I said I just think it is a board weirdness. Almost like "make page available offline" and then it just shows you static content. Let me know if you experience it differently.
Really hafta go to bed now! Tink *~*~*

Last night I was going nuts trying to view pages here. I was using IE, but had Netscape as my default browser.
IE kept popping open Netscape and pointing me to a cached copy of the page. I made IE my default browser and it stopped. It's a Microsoft conspiracy! lol
The error kind of reminds me of some problems I had setting up my own website. You can set links to be in relation to the page your editing or the site it self. When it was page related links pointed to my C drive instead of the site. Grrrr....easy to fix, but frustrating since you don't usually catch it until you access your site from a different computer than the one you created it on. I toss my cookies for Disney.
I wonder what inspired this new Disney T-shirt? "I'm right. You're wrong. Any Questions?"

You should NOT have to download any file to post here!
LL, what was/is the name of the file and what are its properties? I like persons better than principles, and I like persons with no principles better than anything else in the world.

Oh sure....NOW you ask after I've been culling and pruning my harddrive removing stuff and repairing. Sorry, Crank, I don't have that info anymore. After the first few replies, I figured it was just residual aftershocks of my IE browser.
Sorry.
And would you PLEASE take that kiss off of your face? The eyebrow was bad enough, but now those LIPS!! :-X
