Posted 12-21-02 10:57 PM Cast for the Journey: John, 42, Old Widowed Man, pushing trip 20 at WDW, DVC member. John the Smaller, 9, now at trip 16.
Resort: Saturday 12/21: Four Points Lakeside.
12/22-29: Old Key West, Studio.
Weather: Clear Blue Skies with Temperatures ranging from Mid 30's to Mid 60's; Absolutely gorgeous...Knocking on press board desk.
Pet Peeve of the Day: Driving through Baton Rouge, Louisiana...YUCK!! Always heavy traffic, always a pain. A generalization, I know, but always my experience.
The Trip: As last year's holiday trip, we decided to drive. I do not have to be back to work until January 6, so this was not a problem. We left beautiful Baytown, Texas at about 2:15 on Friday, 12/20. Our drive was wonderful, and timing was perfect until just outside of Baton Rouge, LA. It was there that we hit the hour in traffic. Add to that the stress of John the Smaller deciding that he had an urgent restroom need. STRESS!! I tried encouraging him to go in the empty McDonald's cup, but he refused. Hey, It's a Guy Thing. We finally got through the traffic, and I brilliantly pulled off the freeway, and into Louisiana State University. GREAT!! The exit I chose did not have an entrance back onto the freeway. Lost at LSU...Not in itself a bad thing, but I was trying to make Pensacola. While looking frantically for a place for my Dear Son's relief, we almost ended up seaching for my Fraternity's chapter house...alas, a Gas station. Buisiness taken care of, we set out for about 45 minutes of lostdom...Smaller suggested that I stop and ask for directions. HA!! He has alot to learn before he reaches manhood. At last, we fell upon I-10, and were once again happily on our way. We made Pensacola before midnight, and settled in for sleep. Total cost: $39 at Howard Johnson. Booked on their website.
Saturday was much friendlier for travel, though alot of traffic heading Orlando way. We left P'cola at about 8:15, stopped for Lunch, made our way to the Ocala Welcome Center by 4:30. While there I renewed our AP's, and had found an old 4 Day Park Hopper with a day left. They credited the old ticket at Today's Price, and that tool about $48 off of our renewals. Not bad. Not good, but better than no discounts. Now onto Orlando and our Hotel.
The turnpike was a'bustle with families and doggies in packed mini vans. The toll plaza on Turnpike was backed up, all lanes, a mile. WOW!! We arrived at our hotel about 6:00. We are at the Four Points Lakeside which is a Sheraton property. There are good points, and bad. It appears our room has been flooded, and just left to dry our...Just alot of stain around the door area. Also, a picture is missing from the wall, but the hangers are still there. But, alas, this one comes in right at $40 as well. I got it on Hotwire. They showed 2 1/2 Stars at $30. I was leery, but I am pleased for the cost. Just gonna sleep here, off to Old Key West about 7:00AM.
We decided around 6:30 to head to Magic Kingdom for dinner. John suggested Columbia Harbour House. He had the New England Clam Chowder in Bread Bowl, and I had the salad I had read so much about online. Yea Verily the Salad was Awesome. Field Greens, Feta Cheese, Pineapple, Chicken, Pecans, and a nice Vinagrette. I give it 2 thumbs up!!! The park was crowded, which we expected, so we rode Tommorowland Transit Authority, and were off to our Hotel.
Stopped at Walgreens to get some dental care items. Seems a filling fell out on the way. Not a surface one...NOOOOO! One of the largest ones in my mouth. No pain or sensitivity, so I shall work extremely hard to get through the week. Listerine, Floss, Temporary filling stuff. FUN!!
Tomorrow we will check into Old Key West early, have breakfast at Olivia's so we can get our morning crew hugs, the go get haircuts at Magic Kingdom. Tomorrow is Extra Magic Hour there. We will leave immediately after haircuts for MGM who had their EMH today. In planning for the crowds this week, we are most grateful for DVC. We are content that we will not ride much, but are planning on seeing the tree lighting ceremonies, listening to the story tellers in Epcot, seeing the shows, and visiting characters. Maybe play some miniature golf, and all in all just celebrate all of the beauty of WDW during this season.
