Tink *~*~* Everyone in the firm I work for is on a common review date, which is December. You get your written review from your manager then and sit and talk about it.

Then they have what they call the Battle of the Rankings. First, you are ranked in your own group by your manager. The rankings go from 1 (you are a god/dess) to 5 (you are going to be fired). Then your manager goes to a meeting with his manager, and all the other managers that report to his manager, and they put all the reviews and rankings on the table and start duking it out to see who in this now larger group is a #1, who slips down to a 2, etc. You basically have to have parted the Red Sea or else be really well liked, or else your manager is really well liked and persuasive, in order to be a 1.

Then your manager's manager goes to HER manager and peers and they do the same process all over again, shifting a lot of folks down in the rankings. At no time in any of these rounds of rankings can there be more than 10% of the people in the number 1 spot as they advance to the next round. Again, having parted the Red Sea sometime during the year is about the only way to retain your #1 status and not get pushed down in the rankings.

It is very competitive, and goes on and on in endless rounds of Ranking Battles all through December, all the way to the top of the food chain. To have survived any of these levels of the Rankings Battle with your original ranking intact is a bloody miracle.

Once they get to the top, now they have 10% of ALL the people in the firm globally in a #1 position, the next 10% are in a #2 position, the next 40% are in a #3 position, the next 20% are in a #4 position and the bottom 20% are packing up their stuff and being fired.

Then they take all the #1s and rank them High, Medium, Low. Same with all the #2s, etc. So if you are a Low 1, that means you narrowly escaped being a High 2, etc.

Today I found out that of the entire firm, globally, I am a High 1! But I'm not allowed to mention it to anyone inside the firm, because it will seem like gloating and there are people who started out as a 1 and got knocked down to a 4 by time all the Battles were done and they will feel really bad and probably go out on the ledge and have to be talked down.

At the end of January, we find out what that means in terms of compensation. It was a bad year to do a good job - there's not much pie to be divided in terms of raises and bonuses.

But I just had to come here and post because I'm not allowed to talk about it with my peers at the firm.

You may now all commence the Happy Dance.

:) :) :) :) :)

Regards,
Moses

Well, no....a wise man (my manager) once said that you don't have to know everything, you just have to know the people who do! ;)

Coastalwader Congrats Tink!

If they can't give you money, get something. More paid trips to WDW sounds like a good starting point....

Peggo High five, Tink!
Speaking of brokerage firms...remember the movie Boiler Room? My niece was a secretary in the firm that the movie was based on. Ah fame. She got to see the real FBI carting away boxes of files and computers.
