That's what I typically have used in the past, Mary: neon colored combination locks. Not only are they a little more secure (they have to cut them to get into my suitcase), but they have an added benefit of helping me find my luggage on the conveyer-belt at baggage pick-up.

Hope you have a great trip!
Wow - I can't believe that many people check their luggage! DR never checks bags and got me into the habit of not doing it. We both recently flew from Lansing to KY and had to check a bag because of Christmas - when DR flew out he had to (as well as EVERY person who was checking a bag) walk it over to a security desk and open it for a search then walk it back to the ticket desk to check in. Every bag was done that way. When I flew I did not have to do that, but they did check my carry on as I was getting on the plane. Neither of us were asked to show our ID's as we were boarding the planes - which had been pretty common practice over the last year. Although security has been different in every airport and different at different times in the same airports. Who knows??
But the point now is that EVERY piece of checked luggage is supposed to be searched so any locks - cheap or not will be cut off and your bag will be searched and a form note left behind to let you know. A friend of ours just got back from Colorado and when she got her bag off the dolly in Lansing her suitcase was completely gone and all of her things were in a plastic bag!

Let me get this straight? They're checking Checked luggage but NOT carry-on? Or do carry-ons just go without saying?
I never check bags. Since my second flight I haven't checked bags. I don't like waiting for the luggage to arrive(hopefully) or having someone walk away with mine by "mistake". (Not that I have anything really worth stealing in there. LOL)
I like being about to wrestle my bag out of the overhead and scoot down to my ground transportation, bypassing that whole ordeal. I pack light. I do laundry while there. It's worth it to me. |

My wife reprted the same thing from her flight this week. She had to open the bag that was "checked", and they scanned the bag she carried on.

Carry on's get checked through the walk through security post - like normal - depending on what you have you may or may not have to open it. Recently I have been asked to take off all jackets and shoes - everything accessorie goes through the scanning machine. The problem I ran into is I keep getting "randomly" spot checked as I'm boarding the plane - having to open my carry on and take off my shoes etc... that gets realllllly annoying when you have a connecting flight! I don't exactly look very suspicious - but I always have carry on luggage.

Are these regular shoes or suspicious bomb type running shoes? |
