Anyone got any remedies to help a toothache?
(besides getting drunk)
Funny how teeth act up during holidays when no dentists are at work. I can't shove aspirin into the tooth because it's a back one that I thought had a root canal because it's completely covered in a crown. |

You may want to ask Livda T. Nirtom...:D |

Advil can help numb the pain but it takes time to work so a more immediate solution would be Anbesol or any gel type oral numbing medicine.
In the mean time start on the Advil to get it built up in your system. |

You aren't congested, are you? Sometimes if your sinuses are congested it can give you a toothache. So, if you are congested, you might want to take some sudafed, and it might help the toothache.
Another thing to consider is the type of toothbrush you are using. If the bristles aren't soft, they can cause the teeth to hurt. And, you might want to consider using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. My teeth are very sensitive. When they bother me, I rub some sensitive teeth toothpaste on the affected area, and it helps.

I am the Toothache Queen! I am the hands-down winner of the World's Worst Teeth contest. They tell me this can be a side effect of chemo, although one that few people suffer (aside: if there is a side affect of chemo, or any other drug, even a remote one, I will be the winner of the side effect sweepstakes - just "lucky" I guess!).
If you feel like it might be abcessing, which is often the case with "failed" root canals, I suggest the application of a very warm, wet teabag to the gum area, preferably green tea, to get it to errupt. You just won't get any relief until it errupts, and the tea has chemicals in it which do a fair job of keeping any wound clean until you can get to a dentist.
In the chemical pain relief department, I suggest Aleve (used to be sold as prescription-only naprocin). It's a bit stronger than Advil, and you can take two to start.
HOWEVER, Francine's point about swollen sinuses making you think you have a toothache is a good one. Check that out first. |

Oh man! Remind me never to ask advice here on how to get rid of boils or other unsightly lumps.
You'd no doubt pull out all the stops and I'd find myself spreading cow doody on my owies.
That reminds me.
How do you keep your lips from getting chapped?

Spread a bit of cow manure on them and you won't be tempted to lick them. |

Nope on the cow doody. It's for hairy palms...:D |

Seriously Vanilla Extract will numb a toothache temporarily. Just take a paper towel, napkin or some cotton and drinch the tooth with vanilla extract. I promise you it works. |

I had never thought of this, Beauty. I'll have to try it if I have a problem with a tooth next time. I've found that the Extra Strength Ambesol works VERY well, but you have to watch that you don't get some your tongue and your tongue goes numb!
I wonder if it's the alcohol in the vanilla extract that numbs it? I'm sure we have some homeopathic (sp?) people on this board who could tell us the derivitives that would explain why vanilla extract works.
Personally, I'm leaning toward "stuffed sinuses" rather than "botched root canal". I'm always amazed in the wintertime what stuffed sinuses do to my head and how they can affect my jaw and teeth.
Hang in there Dab. And let us know if the sudafed worked!

Definitely a toothache, not sinus problems. This extra strength/doctor strength orajel tastes like CRAP!!!! LOL
I thought it was the bottom tooth but it may be the top one, it just hurts all over on that side. Amazing how you get toothaches over weekends or holidays when dentists aren't in.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions...I'm trying different things! |

same thing with our pets - they always need a vet over the weekend or a holiday!
Hope you're feeling better soon - the ambesol works for me, brushing gently and a glass of milk - all together works and a good night's sleep

Hey, Dab, hope you are feeling better! Had a bad sinus infection this week and had toothaches in both upper and lower jaws, what a bummer! Funny that this came up in a thread, cause the cold is almost gone, and so is the toothache. Thought I was falling apart! |
