Posted 02-13-03 03:16 PM Curious if you all are buying the duct tape and plastic sheeting? I haven't (btw, the plastic black trash bags work also).
I just heard a person say that with the heat and carbon monoxide in your home, it could be very dangerous to be in a sealed room. I have no clue but this is just reminding me of the 70's with the Russians and all of that stuff.
We do have 3 days supply of food anyway for our tornado kit with old 2 liter soda bottles filled with water. (we are on a well so we use those if the electricity goes out).
I don't know what to think anymore.

Posted 02-13-03 03:30 PM We were just having this discussion over lunch in the office here today. Keep in mind, I work with medical professionals and researchers. Besides the one laughing about her MIL calling to make sure she had duct tape & plastic (but had NO idea why it was needed) the general consensus is:
1. that they won't protect any of us as commercial plastic won't filter out biohazardous material
2. any of us that truly are protected would probably die a slow death as food & water run out
3. we would be shutting in just as potentially harmful household cleaners
4. we live in a big city. Apartment buildings may be targets. What? and where? are we supposed to be safe? The chance that an individual building will be a target is small
5. we can't let them win. If they have the capability, there is little we can do to change the effects.
6. If we gotta go, we want to go fast
I won't let this alert change the way I live my life. I still plan to go to WDW in April (assuming I can find a decent airfare), will take my western trail wagon train vacation in July, plan to go to Mousefest 2003 in December. More importantly, I go to work everyday and continue with my regular routine. Mary

Posted 02-13-03 03:30 PM I don't see how the duct tape and plastic wrap will be helpful. I can't imagine sealing ourselves up like that. But, we do have a jumbo pack of black trash bags, and a couple rolls of duct tape in the house. I have a few days supply of food (mostly cereal, crackers, PB&J...) and water just set aside (we too are on a well and the water is a staple in case we lose power). I guess we could all huddle in the master bedroom (I'm thinking we'd need a bathroom.)
My husband is the realist and he's debunked a lot of my concerns, as well as created ones I didn't have before (he's a fun conversationalist ) but after all is said and done I'm still faced with the reality that I'm more in danger just driving to Target around here -many many big trucks that smoosh little cars- than I am from terrorists, so somehow that comforts me (strange?)

I have no plans to buy stuff to seal off the house. Three reasons: 1) I was also concerned about carbon monoxide, etc, 2) in order for taping up a room to work, we'd also have to shut off the furnace, and I'm not about to do that, and 3) sealing us off also means sealing the dogs off and how are they supposed to go outside and pee if we're sealed off.
I also keep candles, flashlights, batteries, water, food, etc on hand for tornado & power outage emergencies. I'm debating gathering them up from all over the house (along with a couple of days personal care items) and packing them into a couple of soft-sided coolers and backpacks. From the sounds of things, if something should happen they also want you to be portable (which makes sense I guess).

I mentioned it somewhere here but don't remember where.
Driving vacation. Going north out of Illinois as far
as Boise. Then down to Phoenix, Vegas & SoCal (for
Disneyland) before coming home. We have not yet pulled
out the atlas to do any major planning BUT I could
potentially visit Robb & Karma in Minnesota. If we
go through SLC I will definitely be trying to hook
up with Janie. Robin is in So Cal, I think, so I'm
trying to get Crank to come on down for a meet. I'd
like to go through Texas to find Coastal but YKW2
doesn't want to go there
Originally, I thought we were just going to Boise
and the Pacific Northwest (where I COULD find Crank!)
Anyone who thinks they might be along my trail and wants to meet, give me a heads up! This will all take place in July. We have a wedding in Phoenix the 3rd weekend. Mary

Posted 02-13-03 04:42 PM 1. It's not that cold.
2. Preparing for the cold is a lot like preparing for the heat.
3. I was transfered here, and never had the opprotunity to leave once I left that job (roads were closed).
4. Damn good hospitals here, I have a living Wife and Son to prove that point.
5. Lakes, Lakes, Lakes
6. For every 10 Minnesotans who move to Arizona, 1 of us has to live here. State law you know.
7. Everyone who lives in Arizona is from somewhere else, so why not me.
8. It snows more in Northern Arizona than Minnesota (yup, it's true).
9. The weak live in the warmth, the strong live in the cold and don't complain.
10. I originally looked 10 years younger than I am, and the wind had finally aged me to where I am supposed to be. Dad Extraordinaire

Yep! They make camouflaged colored duct tape too. I cant really think of anyplace to use it, but I do think it's cool that they make it!

I think I've seen my share of camouflaged everything to last awhile from paper towel holders to sheets. I have a hard time believing the BX sells a lot of that stuff.

Posted 02-13-03 11:23 PM Well to add a little political humor:
Hu's on First
Scene: The Oval Office
George: Condi! Nice to see you. What's happening?
Condi: Sir, I have the report here about the new leader of China.
George: Great. Lay it on me.
Condi: Hu is the new leader of China.
George: That's what I want to know.
Condi: That's what I'm telling you.
George: That's what I'm asking you. Who is the new leader of China?
Condi: Yes.
George: I mean the fellow's name.
Condi: Hu.
George: The guy in China.
Condi: Hu.
George: The new leader of China.
Condi: Hu.
George: The Chinaman!
Condi: Hu is leading China.
George: Now whaddya' asking me for?
Condi: I'm telling you Hu is leading China.
George: Well, I'm asking you. Who is leading China?
Condi: That's the man's name.
George: That's who's name?
Condi: Yes.
George: Will you or will you not tell the name of the new leader of China?
Condi: Yes, sir.
George: Yassir? Yassir Arafat is in China? I thought he was in the Middle East.
Condi: That's correct.
George: Then who is in China?
Condi: Yes, sir.
George: Yassir is in China?
Condi: No, sir.
George: Then who is?
Condi: Yes, sir.
George: Yassir?
Condi: No, sir.
George: Look, Condi. I need to know the name of the new leader of China. Get me the Secretary General of the U.N. on the phone.
Condi: Kofi?
George: No, thanks.
Condi: You want Kofi?
George: No.
Condi: You don't want Kofi.
George: No. But now that you mention it, I could use a glass of milk. And then get me the U.N.
Condi: Yes, sir.
George: Not Yassir! The guy at the U.N.
Condi: Kofi?
George: Milk! Will you please make the call?
Condi: And call who?
George: Who is the guy at the U.N.?
Condi: Hu is the guy in China.
George: Will you stay out of China?!
Condi: Yes, sir.
George: And stay out of the Middle East! Just get me the guy at the U.N.
Condi: Kofi.
George: All right! With cream and two sugars. Now get on the phone.
(Condi picks up the phone)
Condi: Rice, here.
George: Rice? Good idea. And a couple of egg rolls, too. Maybe we should send some to the guy in China. And the Middle East. Can you get Chinese food in the Middle East? CONTRAINDICATIONS: If you are allergic to any word on this post, do not read.
