My daughter
printed this picture out so she could show it to
her classmates:
Guess my daughter's perspective on things never fails to
amaze me.

It was awesome,
wasn't it Janie? Who'd've thunk when we were there,
we'd be looking at our experience with different
eyes after Saturday. It really impressed my kids
more after having been to KSC. My daughter recognized
the VAB and launch pad view.
Your photo is great.

Mike, it is AWESOME! I would love to know what your kids
said when they first heard the news and when they saw the
launch pad on tv.
My daughter was shocked to hear the news and she pointed
it out on tv and said. "We were there two months ago!" We
talked about quite a bit and I told her how I felt when
I saw the first man on the moon. I was only 5 years old
but I SURE can remember the excitement and that black and
white pictures of them bouncing up and down across the
lunar surface. I truly need to go back to KSC and listen
to the tape of Neil Armstrong saying "One small step for
man and giant leap for mankind..." The static noise on
that tape sounded absolutely divine.
Back to 2002 KSC, it is amazing especially when Samuel
saw the Space Shuttle Explorer on display and said "Mommy--that's
HUGE!" The tiles under the shuttles were so interesting
to look at because each one was numbered and stamped. We
even saw used tiles and how scorched it looked!
I don't think I have the drive or dedication to be an astronaut
so I admire people who do that for the sake of mankind
and knowledge.
Oh goodness me! Look at me---prattling on about these things.
Would love to hear other people's impression of watching
an astronaut's first steps on the moon. Did people talk
in awed voices as they watched? Any whooping and cheering?
Crying?
Okay---I'm being flaky so I'll stop....so thank you Mike
for sharing your experience on visiting KSC.

Oh, I very
much remember the first walk on the moon. My whole
family watched at my grandparent's house. It was
a very big deal because my grandfather was an YKWnautical
engineer and had designed a piece of the lunar lander.
So, needless to say it was a memorable moment for
our family.

Ditto Sirius's reply. My dad was in the same line of work
and while it was an incredible fete' to watch anyway, it
was made more interesting and spectacular for me to know
my father had played a bit part in the ability of the men
to get there AND back!
Amazing humans. Creating amazing machines...and the men
who then use those machines to explore anything and everything
within our reach.
Wow. Truly awe inspiring, isn't it?

I wasn't even
born then - it was another 5 years before I was around!
However, I remember when the first shuttle went up. We
were in school and we all went into the hall and watched
it on the school's tv...I remember holding my breath til
it was safely away.

I was 12 when
we landed on the moon. I still have mementos from
KSC on the event (I wasn't at KSC but visited there
that year).
The Challenger explosion is one that I will always remember
where I was when I heard, just like Kennedy's assissination.
Actually my daughter (and son's) first "oh, wow!" was when
they saw the shuttle's take off 2 weeks ago. "We were there!" they
said, as they saw the launch pad view from the same angle
we saw it, and saw the VAB.
Then, this weekend, when the shot of them lowering the
flag with the launch pad in the distance came on the news
and papers, my daughter again talked about her visit and
how she liked it. I don't think the tragedy of the deaths
really hit her (or him). If I showed them the picture I
saw today of the helmet laying in a Texas field - that
would probably make an impression.

Mike--
This is amazing and sad at the same time. At my daughter's
school, I overheard two ladies talking about the helmet
in the field---is it amazing that I can say "I overheard...."?! ---
so I asked them about it and they described the picture
that they saw so I could look it up on the 'net.
Would you PLEASE direct me to the site that has this picture
or send me the link? I'm just too tired to go looking for
it on the 'net. Please let me know what your daughter thinks
when she sees that picture.
Thanks!
Janie

uh oh.
Now you are taxing my memory. I'll try to find it - most
of what I have read has been linked from the Drudge Report
but I don't remember if it was there or in a newspaper.
I'll see what I can find.
Yes, I am always thrilled when you say "I heard" or "I
overheard"! God is good, Janie!
My kids at school signed a banner (the entire school signed)
to be sent to the Kennedy Space Center in memorium.
They were pretty excited about that.

Oh Mike! Did you take a picture of the banner? I would
LOVE to see it.

I remember watching in pre-school. I also remember kissing
a girl for the first time after it. Hey it seemed like
the right thing to do.
That first shuttle was Columbia.

Kissing a girl
in pree-school today, Capt'n, would get you arrested!
Janie, I didn't see the banner, my kids told me about it.
Then they had it on our local news last night. It was huge
- 15 ft wide and I don't know how long. A local radio station
took it around to different schools yesterday and is sending
to KSC already today at noon.
But, no, I don't have a picture.

Aw dang it! However, I still think that it is wonderful
that the schools had the chance to sign it to show their
support. Thanks for sharing that tidbit with me.
I finally found the picture of the helmet. I stopped at
a grocery store and saw it plastered on the front of a
local newspaper---we don't get newspaper anymore since
we rarely have time to sit down and read. (sighing) Do
work on the internet, PTA, critiqing other people's manuscripts,
and etc.
(sighing)
It was odd to see that white beat up helmet on the ground
and you are right, it made me to take a step back and reflect.
