I just can't imagine. I remember vividly the Challenger explosion - I was 9 and at home sick from school with Strep throat. I was anxiously awaiting the shuttle lift-off - I was going to be an astronaut someday and loved everthing to do with space. Jan 28, 1986 changed my thoughts on my future forever. Now, having a family of my own, today's tragedy has affected me in a much different and deeper way.

God Bless the crew and God be with their loved ones at this time.

I too was home sick that day 17 years ago.

I can still remember so much from that day.

I am sure I will remember this day as well.

I have too many days that I remember all too well

So many tragedies stand out clearly in my mind - where I was, what I was doing... it is a shame I cannot remember so many more happy memories the same way

I can! Getting to know you and others on CG count as happy memories especially swiping Francine's chocolates! Columbia's crew wouldn't want us to feel that way and our loved ones who have "gone home" wouldn't either.

I only have one regret: Hearing the cheers and whoops over the FIRST shuttle take off and landing when I was in a certain grade--ain't telling you how old I am---

Come on guys! Post your favorite memory of the Space shuttle RIGHT HERE! And if we'll ever go to MARS! What a way to fire up the imaginations

The most awesome sight I'd ever seen was at Kennedy Space Center when my dad took me as a kid (also my first trip to WDW ) We took the tour bus out to the launch pad and manoman, seeing it was amazing. I figured someday I'd be climbing on board one of those winged-beauties and blasting off into space. I was also inspired by Space Camp - the movie I had always loved space and dreamed of being an astronaut. Seeing the movie made it all the more real. I decided I was going to go to Huntsville, AL for space camp training in High School, join the airforce after graduation and eventually become a shuttle commander. I never got to live out my dream, but the passion I had for it back then always brings a smile to my face.

This is so sad. Most of the astronauts were married with children. I pray that God will offer them comfort.
As for the Iraqis saying this is God's punishment....phffffft!
Just wait till it rains smart bombs...You'll wish you had Moses!
Add insensitivity to their repertoire.

Please don't fall for this nonsense. If you look closely at the "news" that provided this quote, you will see that it should not be responded to in this manner. This was one person, an auto-mechanic IIRC. This was not the official government repsonse, which has been of support and sympathy. If you asked people on the streets here in the US, you'd find idiots just like this as well. To use this person's quote as the Iraqi response is reprehensible.

Well, technically, the widely reported story did have one government official and the mechanic making similar comments.

The problem with the story reported in the American media (what lesa is referring to)is that only a small portion of the original was actually printed. In fact, they left out much more than they printed.

If you read the story directly from it's source, it goes on to say the government official was not speaking in an official capacity. It also goes on to quote probably five or six more Iraqi citizens who expressed sorrow over the loss. In essence, the original story if read in full context was centered around the conclusion that the average Iraqi's response was sympathetic.

I remember being in school when Challenger was lost and watching the tv all day. It's probably the first real memory I have of collective national shock and grief, although unfortunately not the last.

This past Saturday I was standing with my husband and daughter in Epcot looking at those balloon balls in the passageway outside Innoventions. It was sometime between 9:30 A.M. and 10:00 A.M. when the CM working the cart suddenly exclaimed that the shuttle had exploded over Dallas and showed us his text pager. Shock, grief, and fear can't even describe my thoughts at that time. It was really surreal to be there at my happy place and hear that sort of thing. And I hate the initial fear that took hold also, something I'm still not used to being a reality of life.

It was odd being in FL when it happened, not being from there and being so close to one of the centers of this tragedy. My prayers are with the families of the crew, most especially with the children who have now lost a parent.
