How terrible. I would hazard a guess that something blew on board, maybe along the lines of what happened to Apollo 13?

Contrary to other opinions on other boards, I do not for one second believe this to be terrorism. I feel this was a horrible, horrible accident.

Another sad history making day/event.

There are now what?.....2 shuttles that remain? It's so incredible the amount of stress that's placed on these machines especially at launch and just prior to touchdown.

Godspeed to the crew.

LL, this was not terrorism.
My father used to work on components for the shuttle. He's an engineer by trade and he's always amazed at the ability to get the shuttles in the air, and back to earth again.
The number of things that can go wrong to make it impossible to land are enormous and it wouldn't take much, even being angled a few degrees off on re-entry that could make for a disastrous end to an otherwise successful flight.

This is /was not the act of a terrorist, jmho but I would bet on it.

There are now local reports of debris in fields about 50 miles South of Dallas. Not a lot out there, but enough that some debris could have come down in lightly populated areas.

Edited to add that reports now have debris near Fairfeild and Palestine.....about 35 miles between the two towns.

Our band played out last night, and I slept late. The clock radio woke me at 9:30am EST with the awful news.
We've been lulled into complacency by the fact that our equipment is so good and rarely malfunctions. When something like this happens, it comes as a real slap in the face. But the fact is that when you come smoking back to Earth at 12,000+ MPH, anything can happen.
May God bless those poor souls and their families.

We here in Houston are in deep shock. Everybody in my area of town either works at NASA or knows someone who does. This is like a punch in the gut for us. The astronauts train here and live here. I guess it's a poetic irony that they all came home to Texas in the end. I am beyond sad...

Godspeed, Columbia.

HIGH FLIGHT

OH, I HAVE SLIPPED THE SURLY BONDS OF EARTH
AND DANCED THE SKIES ON LAUGHTER SILVERED WINGS,
SUNWARD I'VE CLIMBED, AND JOINED THE TUMBLING MIRTH
OF SUN SPILT CLOUDS - AND DONE A HUNDRED THINGS
YOU HAVE NOT DREAMED OF WHEELED AND SOARDED NO SWUNG
HIGH IN THE SUNLIT SILENCE HOV'RING THERE.
I'VE CHASED THE SHOUTING WIND ALONG AND FLUNG
MY EAGER CRAFT THOUGH FOOTLESS HALLS OF AIR.
UP, UP THE LONG DELIRIOUS, BURNING BLUE
I'VE TOPPED THE WINDSWEPT HEIGHTS WITH EASY GRACE
WHERE NEVER LARK OR EVEN EAGLE FLEW
AND WHILE WITH SILENT, LIFTING MIND I'VE TROD
THE HIGH UNTRESPASSED SANCTITY OF SPACE
PUT OUT MY HAND, AND TOUCHED THE FACE OF GOD.

So, so sad.

When we went to Kennedy Space Center this past July they didn't pretend that shuttle flights were safe, and I think my kids decided right there they did not want to be astronauts! I was always amazed at the ability of the flight crew to get over fear of the risks.

There are people still in the space station. The question is, will they send a shuttle up to get them without fully understanding what went wrong here, or will we ask the Russians for help to bring them home?

I can't imagine how they must feel being there.

Annie-
I think the Space Station has a 3 man Soyez capsule always attached and a Russian on hand to fly it.
I might be way off base, but I think that's why the crews are never more than three people after the shuttle leaves.

They were looking for debris I guess a couple hours from my house as something was burning there. They reran this story of a 10 year old student here, her uncle was Michael Anderson. Her and her grandmother went to FL to watch him take off and NASA gave her a lot of stuff to take back to share with her class. At the end of the article it said that the teacher was waiting for confirmation from Michael Anderson to when he could come speak to his neice's class. It was written a few weeks ago.

My kids said the same thing when we visited KSC in December. Full of risks BUT full of REWARDS. I don't think we should give up the space program like my neighbor said to me this morning. It would dishonor the astronauts and their families' sacrifices for the program if we did....

Prayers for the families who have lost their loved ones.

Ditto what annie said. I do NOT know how they manage to get past the "OMG! This is really REALLY DANGEROUS!!!" and move on to doing their jobs, jobs that they proudly and VERY bravely commit to.

This is so sad. Most of the astronauts were married with children. I pray that God will offer them comfort.
As for the Iraqis saying this is God's punishment....phffffft!
Just wait till it rains smart bombs...You'll wish you had Moses!
Add insensitivity to their repertoire.

(No, I'm not militant, but they just pushed a button with that statement, and the way things are going, and the lack of information from my dh who is deployed, I know it's just a matter of time...)

It's just been surreal here.

Our local stations are broadcasting to the nieghborhoods where the astronauts lived and to most of the areas where the debris came down. They are now finding human remains.

What a really small world this is.

Unbelievably, one man found a mission patch intact on his land. How it survived, I can't imagine. The poor guy was just crying on local tv (KTRK, Coastal.) My husband works at KTRK and called to say he doesn't know when he'll be home. My nephew-in-law is busy flying NASA personnel all over the state and doesn't know when he will be home. Meanwhile, it's my daughter's 12th birthday and the family was supposed to be here to celebrate. Surreal would describe it well. Hundreds of people are leaving flowers, flags, and pictures outside the gates of Johnson Space Center. Sheriff's deputies are guarding the astronauts' homes. Mayor Brown cancelled the SuperBowl Kick Off party that was scheduled for tonight (Houston hosts the SB next year.) A reporter friend of ours called to say he was watching a crew put remains in a hearse somewhere between Nacogdoches and San Augustine. He said you can't go 50 feet without finding a piece of debris. Surreal surreal surreal.

I just can't imagine. I remember vividly the Challenger explosion - I was 9 and at home sick from school with Strep throat. I was anxiously awaiting the shuttle lift-off - I was going to be an astronaut someday and loved everthing to do with space. Jan 28, 1986 changed my thoughts on my future forever. Now, having a family of my own, today's tragedy has affected me in a much different and deeper way.

God Bless the crew and God be with their loved ones at this time.

{hugs}

I watched CNN report on which body part had been recovered at that scene. It seems less than newsworthy to report that particular kind of finding. I feel for the families of all the folks that are a part of our space program. It is a terrible loss.

I also remember the Challenger. I watched the disaster from work. Today is just as horrible and emotional. On the ABC World News tonight (apx 5-5:30) they reported that already there were bits of the debris being sold on Ebay. I don't understand this one little bit How could anyone have the nerve. Heartless! I hope that ABC was misinformed on this point. If in fact it's true, then I hope NASA demands the name & address of any seller of this debris, shows up on their doorstep and demands the material back. When they have it back they should slap the individuals silly for their heartless behavior.

My thoughts are certainly with the families this evening.

No slap, it's a federal offense I hear. I just cannot believe it all, I've been watching on and off all day. My ex called today to remind me that we saw the first one land. I didn't think it was the first one but it could have been. We were in DL and drove to Edwards, parked on a desert road along with tons of others and took pictures that only showed blue sky when developed. I saw it plain as day but my film just wasn't fast enough.

I'll be happy to do the slapping but somebody gotta help me hold them down. How could they do this incredibly stupid thing? What if someone decided to sell parts of a van that their loved ones died in?

Sheesh!
