Grandma’s Frosted Molasses Christmas Cookies
1 Cup of Crisco
3/4 Cup of Granulated Sugar
2 Teaspoons of Ground Cinnamon
3 Teaspoons of Baking Soda
1 Teaspoon of Salt
1 Cup of Molasses
1/2 cup of water
Sift 5 ½ Cups of Flour into a Large Mixing Bowl. In a Smaller Bowl, add all of the above ingredients, and mix by hand gently. Add mixture in small bowl to large bowl. Knead by hand until solid. Roll dough into logs and wrap with wax paper. Chill overnight.
Roll out dough into thin sheets ¼ inch deep, cut with Christmas shaped cookie cutters. Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees. Bake 9-12 minutes, until firm but not crisp. Cookies should be baked, but soft. Cool for 30 minutes.
Part of this recipe is the tradition of our family decorating the cookies. So, with one or two cans of vanilla frosting, or home mage vanilla frosting, prepare one to three helpers and a variety of food colorings and sugar sprinkle decorations. Put out wax paper on a table, and mix small amounts of frosting into different dishes and add coloring. We decorate cookies to make them look like stars, Christmas trees, Santa, Ornaments and Gifts. Serve with milk. Store in tins with wax paper separating the layers of cookies.
Part of this recipe is the tradition of our family decorating the cookies. Our Grandmother or Mother would bake the cookies, and we (the kids) would spend part of the afternoon frosting. More than slapping frosting on the cookies, we would use food coloring to create our little works of art. Surprisingly enough, we were able to get through decorating before we would be tempted to eat them. Now as an adult, I can't say that I get past the first frosted one.
